Freefall QAL--I'm Still Stepping

I have to admit that I pretty proud of myself for completing Step 3 of this QAL which Sandra of mmm! Quilts is hosting.  It's been awhile since I done any foundation piecing and it's good to sew something out of your comfort zone. I still had to draft the pattern for the large leaf points since my printer won't print the correct size which is the reason why I was procrastinating making these blocks.  I'm glad to say these blocks turned out well and am hoping that the large leaf points will click into place once they are sewn with the leaf blocks.

I'm using two different lights from the same fabric line for these blocks since I didn't have enough of just one print.  I'm using the smaller print for the leaf blocks and the larger print for the large leaf points and open areas; I think it's going to work.

Updated Version                                                                   Original Version
Update:  I changed two of the blocks by switching to the other light fabric; I think this creates a nicer flow.

Most of the fabrics I'm using for this quilt were purchased when we were on vacation in Arizona exactly one year ago.  It's funny I didn't realize it until this week when Facebook reminded me of this trip and as I was laying the blocks on my design board that this quilt is going to be a nice momento of the Grand Canyon--it was absolutely breathtaking.

  1. I love your blocks and the two backgrounds work really well. Great job on the drafting/paper piecing too. So weird your printer won't behave!! What a treat to use fabrics that are a reminder of a great trip.

    1. Hi Kathleen, would you believe I've already made a change on one of the blocks, it looks better now. I know what the problem with the printer is, it won't print full size because of the margins. I just have to figure out how to change the printer default. Have you made your blocks yet?

    1. Thanks Tish. I'm liking the process involved in making these blocks, a little more involved than I'm used but glad I did the QAL.

  7. Great fabric choices, and I like the changes. I did my large leaf points on freezer paper, drew out the measurements and went from there. Your large leaf is fabulous.

  9. The small change in your background fabric and placement does indeed help with the flow. I really like seeing all your blocks laid out together!

    1. Thanks Yvonne. I'm glad I changed the two blocks and what was annoying is had I look at my diagram first, I had noted that this was the background I wanted to use for this block. But no. Another example of something I should have labeled on the zip lock bag.

  10. I had to look twice (glad you added the arrows!) to see just what change you made! It looks wonderful, and ha, I had to look twice to realize you had two different light backgrounds, so excellent job on all accounts, especially for persevering with templates, THANK you! I wish I knew (maybe ask Tish, lol) how to do the margins adjustment. I know with mine I had to click some box to get the 1" square to be correct when I was doing Joanne's (Canuck Quilter) Snow Along. I just LOVE your fabrics, as I've said before, and wow, so cool that it will be a memento of that stunning canyon. :-)
