It's Time To Snuggle With The Squiggle Quilt

Just when I thought I wasn't going to have anything to post about this week since it seems I was having a hard time getting started working on any of my many projects waiting for me in the studio, I have a finally finished with my Squiggle Quilt.  It seems that my Bee Sisters and the others who joined Christa Watson's QAL were finishing theirs and I've only had the top made and the backing sewn.  I was away babysitting my granddaughter last week, which I like to mention my hubby and I make a great diaper changing team and I can still hold my breath for a very long time. Once I returned home this past Monday, I just didn't have the energy to climb down the stairs until Wednesday and once down there I went into quilt action and decided that I needed to finish one QAL and Squiggle it was.  Of course, like the many other times I have a quilt that is finally finished, the weather decided to be cold and gloomy.
I didn't have a hard time deciding on the quilting, after all a Squiggle quilt should be quilted with squiggly lines.  I only have a few quilting techniques in my repertoire and wavy, curvy lines is one of them--it's just a nice, relaxing way to quilt.  Also, as mentioned in a previous post, some of my triangle points do not line up since I unfortunately did not measure the charm packs before I started sewing and it turned out they were almost 5-1/4" and I also mixed it with 5" squares I cut from the yardage.  Even though I trimmed all the squares to 5", I knew some of my points were going to be off and some wavy quilting will be needed to make it less noticeable.  I followed Christa's technique of starting the quilting on the right side and I finished it on the left side which I have to say all four edges of my quilt were pretty straight.  Once you see my Squiggle quilt, you really can't see where the points don't line up, and if you can, you're standing too close to it.
With all of the colors in this quilt, I chose to "gray" everything else like the connecting corners, backing and the binding which I have to say is pretty perfect since I wanted to use a dark gray to accentuate the colors and I happened to have such a print and enough of it in the Blueberry Park stash. The only thing that I don't like about the Blueberry Park fabrics is the texture which has the feel of screen painting and makes the fabric, to me, feel stiff.  I used a Microtex Sharp needle for quilting and decided to machine quilt the binding since I thought it may be hard to hand sew.  I was looking forward to sewing the binding while watching Olympics but guess I could use the time to work on another project that awaits me.  Just last week, I thought I was ahead of the Postcards from Sweden QAL and now I am seeing from other posts I follow, some of the participants are already sewing their HSTs. Hopefully, I'll be sewing them this weekend. BTW, I have to mention that Hubby installed daylights in my studio which is in the basement and it has been a real game changer--photos taken in the studio never looked this bright and I can't believe I've been sewing in the dark for the past five years.
I wasn't expecting to love this quilt as much as I do now. There are so many different colors in the Blueberry Park fabric line and I used everyone of them except for the black and navy prints in this quilt.  The colors just reminds me of something from my childhood, I keep thinking of wrapped hard candy like Charms or maybe Jolly Ranchers.  The colors are just that yummy and am happy with the way my quilt turned out which is why I calling it Squiggle Delight.  I was thinking that I was going to gift this quilt but having second thoughts now, I'm needing to snuggle this quilt and hoping life will get brighter soon.

February has gone by way too fast and I have to confess that I have not even started on this month's UFO or Scrap projects.  I'm hoping to get my sew-jo back on soon.  I need lots of sunshine and less snow now.

  3. Your Squiggle quilt turned out beautifully--isn't it great to actually "finish"? I am still plugging away on my son's quilt blocks...he is the last family member that I have left to make a quilt for --I've made one for everyone else...sooo, my husband says" "You know that great lap quilt you made for my retirement 19 years ago--well, it's getting kinda worn out" ;000--and so it goes...hugs, Julierose

  4. Rose, you are so ahead of me in my Squiggles. Yours looks great. I love the Blueberry Park fabrics, but like you they feel a bit stiff. Just cut my binding and hope to have it done and washed this weekend.

  5. Your Squiggles is awesome! Mine is done except for binding, but the schedule says first week of March and I am sticking with that. Grey does work so well with all so many different fabrics, patterns and colors!

  8. Great quilt you got finished. I thought the background fabric was more blue but your close up showed Grey. Thanks for showing how you quilted it too.

  9. The weather may be cold and gloomy but squiggles looks warm and bright. I love the grey binding and the wavy line quilting works great. I didn't know I should start at one side and work to the other, I usually start in the middle, work across then do the other side, hmmmmmmm.

  11. Your Squiggles turned out so nice, a perfect quilt for snuggling under on these dreary winter days! I don't have mine quilted, and likely won't get it quilted any time soon. We are gone this weekend, then next weekend off to visit our daughter in Florida. I haven't even cut my Postcards fabric yet. I'm going to be way behind. Daylights -- I might have to look into those. They might work in my cave!

  12. Oh, yes, grandparents love everything about their grandkids--even those smelly diapers!! It does take a team though. Getting to stay with them for extended care is the best!! I love the variety of colors in your Squiggles quilt. And the gray is a wonderful contrast. Perfect for snuggling.

  13. Hi Rose!
Your Squiggle Delight quilt is truly a delight. I love the way you quilted it - wavy curved lines are in my quilting repertoire, too. So what is the key in going from right to left? That helps in keeping it in square, I'm guessing?! I can totally see the hard candy reference like Jolly Rancher. Such a nice finish. I know from babysitting Dominic for a single day how tiring that can be, so I can only imagine a whole week. You deserve a little time to get your feet back to being at home. Your sew-jo is probably on its way back right now. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

    1. P.S. I'm still cutting out my fabrics for Postcard! I sewed two blocks together just to see how they looked, but we have until 2/28 for cutting. You're okay!! ~smile~ Roseanne

  14. This is a great looking quilt and I'm obviously not standing too close to it because I can't see the points that don't line up. I'm with you on needing more sunshine although our snow has almost all been rained away. I haven't even started cutting out my fabric for postcards.

  15. Your Squiggles turned out super, Rose! I didn't see a single triangle that didn't line up. There might be a few, but who searches for such things? Not me! I see color and cuddliness. Interesting to know that the Blueberry Park fabrics are a little stiff. I have a couple of fabric lines like that. They wash up nice and soft, but seem kinda thick while you're sewing. I also saw someone who misspelled Blueberry, or maybe their phone did autocorrect, and it came out Blubbery Park, which made me laugh :)

  16. February has flown by! I love your Squiggles Delight! Blueberry Park was a fabulous choice for this one and you are right about all those fabulous colors in that line. Beautiful quilt!

  17. Your Squiggles Delight is gorgeous. Those candies are just the right flavor and size to pop into your mouth and enjoy. I don't think I have any Blueberry Park fabrics, but I do have a few pieces that have a strange texture, sort of like you describe. Hmm...

BTW I love your "you really can't see where the points don't line up, and if you can, you're standing too close to it" attitude! Haha I want that on a sign in my studio!

  18. Squiggles Delight is fantastic! The colors are great and it looks perfectly matched to me! I know what you mean about charm squares being not quite the right size, it was a frustration for me from the very beginning. I hope you're doing alright, with your comment that you're hoping life will brighten soon.

  19. I love your Squiggles! And the inspired quilting!!! I so want to make a Squiggles after watching you and all the other bloggers make them. It's on my to-do list. Love the Blueberry Park. Mojo will be returning soon, with warmer days and more sunshine!

  20. The quilt looks fabulous!! I need to use my Blueberry Park fabric!! Love the quilting on it too. I cannot tell you how important good lighting is; it's been a tad dismal in the FL sewing room as compared to my lovely bright loft at home. Not so lovely at home is the snow that apparently fell today...hope it is gone by Saturday!
